Since the French kings anointed their kings with Champagne, Champagne has become synonymous with luxury, special events, and rites of passage. But not any sparkling bottle can be called Champagne.
What is the origin of this celebratory libation? What makes a Champagne?
What is Champagne made of?
Champagne consists of three grape varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier. It is produced exclusively in the Champagne area of France. While sparkling wines are delivered all over the world, the majority of countries only use the term Champagne for wines made in the Champagne area.
Since the Middle Ages, Wine has been produced in this area. There are over a hundred Champagne houses today, plus almost 20,000 smaller vignerons or vine-growing producers.
Champagne
According to legend, the first Champagne in France was created by accident. The fermentation began pressure in the bottle, which caused it to explode. The Devil’s Wine was named.
Get out your sword if you want to impress your guests on New Year’s Eve. A technique known as sabrage can be used at ceremonial events to open Champagne bottles. The saber is slipped along the neck, and the glass is broken. Cheers.
